David M.'s Story

Life You had to know I followed a different drummer. After escaping the oppressive homophobic environment we grew up in I managed to create my own way. Thru the years I founded some of the first gay/lesbian student organizations at several universities in Texas, helped elect politicians that worked for people I care about & in 84-85 also served on the board of the Dallas Gay Alliance & was a founder of the AIDS Resource Center there. By the mid-80's I'd burned out as the number of people I knew dying topped 200. Mind you, working in this field then was a labor of love; it only became an industry later on. So I regrouped & went back to my first love - music. I finished a long-delayed bachelors & went on to New England Conservatory of Music in Boston for a master's degree and afterward to Boston University for doctoral studies. In between there were language studies at Harvard and elsewhere. (Hey, I was already in Boston. Why not?) My thirties were rich with music. For ten years I was blessed to perform in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus with the Boston Symphony and Pops around the world. In addition I got to perform with the Boston Lyric Opera as part of the regular ensemble & was hired by Harvard twice to direct productions on their campus. Probably the highest level of music making I've ever known was performing two years with Emmanuel Music. This professional group, comprised mostly of opera singers based in the city, would rehearse a full Bach Cantata on Saturday, read in German from scratch, and then perform it the next morning - complete - with full Baroque orchestra as a part of the weekly services at this church. Emmanuel Music would perform the entire series of cantatas, well over 200, before repeating any of them. In '96 I decided to try my hand at composing, mostly music theater. I'd commute to NYC weekly to participate in the BMI Musical Theater Workshop from which came at least a quarter of shows on the Great White Way over the last few decades. I loved the creating, but man it's a tough biz. Think of it this way: fewer people write a show that gets produced professionally in all of NYC each year than reach the summit of Mt. Everest. I had a few small successes but nothing to overly brag about. Nowadays I write music mostly for personal enjoyment & for a few friends. I'd like to say that I was able to make my living with all of the above, but sadly, it wasn't to be. Performing, eve...Expand for more
n on that level, is not an easy way to keep a roof over your head. In previous years I'd learned to prepare tax returns from working with my father's CPA firm. I still do them today, more than 20 years later. Also, in the mid-90's I became a Realtor in Boston too & developed a strong buisness. Call me the "Renaissance Guy." In 2000 I had an offer to be the #2 at an opera company in Colorado and jumped at the chance. It should have been the dream job of my life, but ended up a bad fit. It happens. So I moved to NYC - a few months into 2001. You can fill in the blanks for the next year. I managed to survive tho, as did most of us, & move on. Today, I sell real estate in Jersey City across the Hudson from Manhattan, & spend far too much time (& money) enjoying piano bars in Greenwich Village & catching shows as often as I can. And yes, I've had love in my life but've been single for around 10 years. Also, I don't mind sharing: in '98 I tested positive for HIV. Why tell you this? Because it was stupid & if others can learn from that mistake, then please do. TEACH YOUR CHILDREN. They are NOT immune. A virus could care less who it infects. I only let my guard down once; that was all it took. I'm fine, by the way, stubborn & in terrific health (good drugs.) Plan to stay that way. You're stuck with me for quite a while longer. Most of my energies now are redevoted to Gay/Lesbian issues. Before I fall off the planet marriage equality in the US will be a fact! COUNT on it! Congrats to California on their latest acheivement! NJ, where I live now, is just around the corner on this issue and will likely see legislative change within a year placing my folks on parity with everybody else. I stay very actively involved here on several levels. But for personal reasons, watch out Texas, I may just be moving back. Giving it a lot of thought lately. They say you can never go home, but honestly, every time I visit now I'm reminded that DFW, especially FW, isn't the small-thinking town I left nearly 20 years ago. It's pretty terrific and far more cosmopolitan in many ways. (Okay, I could still do without the heat in July and August.) And those things that still need work? Hey, (grin) maybe my skills and talents are needed there once more... We'll see... This world is big enough for ALL kinds of love..... We all get as good as we give. Please say hello when you have a moment. Warm regards, David
